Nomination forms for 2011/12 are available here.
The position of class rep is more then just organising class parties (although that is part of it!), but there are a number of other roles that you’ll have to fill that will really build on your experience and stand to you when you leave DCU. These duties include:
- Representing your class on an academic level
o This will include dealing with lecturers on timetabling, workload and other issues and sitting on programme boards*. You will also liaise with the Faculty convenors who will in turn liaise with us. The idea is that we have an effective system of communication going from the students up to the union ensuring that all problems and views are aired properly.
- Dealing with personal cases
o Sometimes a member of your class may face personal issues that cause distress or make life in DCU difficult for them. Don’t try and take these cases on, just listen as best you can and if you feel the case is too big come to us and we’ll look into it
- Representing the class at Union Council
o As officers of the Union we are answerable to you, the class reps that make up Union Council. Union Council is the governing body for the Students’ Union, it’s a forum for discussion where everyone is free to speak and air the views on both Union and University policies. If there are problems that you or your class face you should bring them to Union Council, there may be others from another class or faculty that have faced similar problems and may be able to advise you. Attending Union Council is one of the main responsibilities of a class rep and its importance should not be underestimated. For our part we’ll try and keep it brief and effective so that matters are dealt with quickly and efficiently.
- Feedback
o You are a point of information for your class and it is your responsibility to communicate to them on various issues or events that may come up throughout the year or decisions made at Union Council.
- Class Parties
o Although it is not your sole responsibility to organise class parties you should act as a facilitator for those in your class who wish to do so. The events co-ordinator is there to help with information and bookings etc
