ALCOHOL POLICY
The consumption of alcohol is a legal and culturally normative component of social life in Ireland. There are many enjoyable aspects associated with moderate consumption of alcohol. However, it is also acknowledged that alcohol-related misuse in particular in sport may contribute to an array of performance suppressing effects. It is the policy of the Association to facilitate the organisation of alcohol-free inter-collegiate championships and events. In doing so it accepts the potential of alcohol abuse to adversely affect the well being of individuals, and the reputation of student sport.
CUSAI will:
- Support programmes of education for Organising Committees of championships to increase their awareness of problems with alcohol abuse and binge drinking at student sporting events.
- Discourage the use of sponsorship of any kind offered by businesses promoting alcohol in student sport.
- Seek to eradicate any reference to inappropriate use of alcohol in rules or constitutions of Inter-Varsity / Collegiate Championships
CUSAI members and event Organising Committees have a responsibility to ensure the health of student athletes and their ability to perform to their potential at the Championship. It is important that the event itself is not impaired by the abuse of alcohol.
- The consumption of alcohol during competition and in the vicinity of ongoing intercollegiate sporting competitions/venues is forbidden. Representative students shall both abide by and adhere to host institutions alcohol policy guidelines.
- The use of alcohol must not impinge on other people’s ability to enjoy the use of the facilities. Excessive drinking may not be used as an excuse for behaviour which contravenes their University / College’s Disciplinary Code.
- Formal post event presentation of medals, awards etc. to take place immediately following a sporting event.
