The roles of a class rep are mixed and varied and are likely to differ from class to class and faculty to faculty. However, there are some general duties that each class rep should fulfill.
This will include dealing with lecturers on timetabling, workload and other issues as well as sitting on program boards. You will also liaise with the faculty convenors, who will in turn liaise with us. The idea is that we have an effective system of communication from the students to the union, which ensures that all problems and views are aired.
Even at the best of times, college life can be stressful and difficult. We all deal with problems in our personal lives sometimes and if a member of your class is experiencing a personal issue that causes distress or anxiety, they may turn to you for help. It is extremely important that you listen but under no circumstances should you take these cases on by yourself. Remember, you are not a counselor; ideally the case should be referred to the Education and Welfare officer who will deal with the student on a discreet and confidential basis and point them in the right direction.
As officers of the Union, we are all answerable to you, the class reps. If you or your class members fell that a particular issue should be aired or discusses, it is your duty to bring that issue to union council. In some cases, other class reps may have experiences similar problems and will be able to advise you on hoe to proceed with the matter. Attending union council is one of your primary responsibilities as a class rep and its importance should not be underestimated. For our part, we try to keep the meetings brief and effective so that matters are dealt with as efficiently as possible.
You are the first point of contact for your class and it is your responsibility to keep them up-to-date on various issues and events throughout the year and on decisions reached at union council.
This can be one of the best parts of being a class rep and it’s certainly a great way for your class to get to know each other outside of lectures. Although it is not your sole responsibility to organize class parties, you should at least try to organize an event or help your class members to do so. If you need any help or advice with this, feel free to contact our campaigns and information officer.
